Whenever I look at these earrings, they make me think of the fairies and gnomes from the books of my childhood. The clearest memory I have is of fairies dancing in a ring of red toadstools in the moonlight. It is said that fairies dancing in their circles at night is what causes those rings of mushrooms we see in the grass. The red-capped toadstool with white spots you often see in fairy tale illustrations. Imagine the pictures you looked at as a child, of pixies and fairies sitting on perfect domed shaped toadstools and you’ll have an idea of just how they look in those books.

Entering a Fairy Ring on May Eve or Halloween night was especially dangerous. There is a story of a shepherd who accidentally disturbed a ring of rushes where fairies were preparing to dance. They captured him and held him captive, and he even married one of them. Freedom from a fairy ring often requires outside intervention!
