While doing some research about the Victorian Era recently, I learned that in the 18th and 19th centuries squirrels were very popular as pets, especially for children. While colonial Americans kept many types of wild animals as pets, squirrels were the most popular. Interestingly enough, many people captured their pet squirrels from the wild in the 1800s, but squirrels were also sold in pet shops. By 1910 squirrels lost their appeal as pets and went back to being those cute birdseed stealing backyard friends.
Enjoy these cuties in the Fall and all year round.
“Sitting under a tree in a park in the summer, listening to birds and squirrels chirping while reading a good book is priceless.”
