I love so many different kinds of vintage jewelry and in these earrings I have brought together two of my favorites.
Worn in the late 1700s throughout the 1800s was a style of jewelry known as mourning jewelry. There were several different styles, but these earrings are inspired by jewelry worn during “first mourning,” the first months of mourning. Those pieces had a matte black finish referred to as “dead black” by those seeking these items. The beauty of these pieces is truly breathtaking.
Paired with the black is a stunning frosted glass cameo in pink punch. A cameo is a form of glyptography, featuring landscapes, portraits, and mythological figures cut into a variety of materials, but most often into glass, stone, and shells.
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty, – that is all / Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”
-John Keats, Ode on a Grecian Urn
