Pumpkins have been grown in North America for five thousand years, native to the western hemisphere. Pumpkins are one of the more resilient fruit, finding ways to grow large in little soil and sharing nutrients along a connected vine that reaches into the ground to replenish itself. Before Halloween was widely celebrated in the United States, kids started taking pumpkins, which were plentiful during the months of September and October, and carving faces into them. After sticking a candle in the pumpkin to light it up, kids would run around, frightening people with them. This became so popular that there were even how-to articles printed in magazines as early as 1842. In Chinese culture, the pumpkin is a symbol of prosperity, abundance, luck, illustrious children, and enchantment.
Enjoy these cuties in the Fall and all year round.
