For some reason, ever since I was a little girl looking at my grandmother’s cameos, I have always thought that cameos were pictures of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. Perhaps it’s because of the statues of Artemis that vaguely resemble the lady carved into the cameo. I really do think these cameos especially look like Artemis.

Artemis had many roles in Greek mythology. She was the moon goddess, responsible for the movement of the moon across the sky. She was also the goddess of the hunt. the protector of animals and young children. And, Artemis was worshipped as one of the primary goddesses of childbirth and midwifery.

Artemis was one of the most widely admired goddesses in Ancient Greece. The Temple of Artemis, also known as Artemision, was rebuilt twice and in its final form it was regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
