The word, Sassenach, comes from the Scottish Gaelic word sasunnach, literally meaning ‘Saxon’, and originally used by Gaelic speakers to refer to non-Gaelic speaking Scottish Lowlanders. In modern Scotland, however, the term has become sassenach, meaning something or someone English.

On these earrings, Sassenach is written on the Fraser Tartan. When I was researching tartans I learned that tartan is alternating bands of colored threads woven to each other in crisscrossed, horizontal, and vertical bands. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials. and are associated with Scotland. I also learned that I had been incorrectly using the word “tartan” and “plaid” as the same thing and they are not!

When you wear these earrings, you will channel your inner Sassenach!

“You dinna need to understand me, Sassenach so long as you love me.”
-Jamie Fraser
