Celtic knots have been found throughout history as far back as the third century A.D. and can be found in many places. They are believed to have symbolized faith, to declare unity between people, and in some cases, to protect against evil spirits. These patterns of one continuous loop are believed to reference eternity and eternal life, especially the knots found at burial sites.
The name shamrock comes from the Irish word ‘seamróg’, which means ‘little clover‘ and was a popular motif in Victorian times. Traditionally, shamrocks are thought to have been used by Saint Patrick to illustrate the the Holy Trinity when bringing Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. The first evidence of a link between St. Patrick and the shamrock appears in 1675 on the St. Patrick’s Coppers or Halpennies.
