Researching, once again, the Skye Boat Song, I learned some interesting things. The song that is sung on the television show appears to have been adapted from “The Skye Boat Song“, a late 19th-century Scottish song the recalls the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he avoided capture by troops, after being defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1892 poem has words similar to the song we know and has also been sung to the tune. No matter the history, it’s one of my favorite songs that I listen to while making jewelry. It always brings me joy and peace.

When you wear this bracelet, I hope that you will carry the beauty of the Skye Boat Song with you.

” Sing me a song of a lad that is gone,
Say, could that lad be I?
Merry of soul he sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.”
-Robert Louis Stevenson
