According to Dictionary.com a Sassenach is ” a typical Englishman or something considered typical of England often used disparagingly by Scots and Irish.” But when Jamie calls Claire a Sassenach he is affectionately pointing out that she is an English foreigner.

When I was researching Tartans, I learned that a Tartan is a patterned cloth consisting of crisscrossed, horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials. and are associated with Scotland. I also learned, interestingly enough, that tartan is often mistakenly called “plaid” (particularly in North America), but in Scotland, a plaid is a large piece of tartan cloth, worn as a type of kilt or shawl. The term plaid is also used in Scotland for a blanket.

Wear this beautiful bracelet and show the world your Fraser tartan Sassenach pride!

“You are my heart—and I your compassion. We are neither of us whole, alone. Do ye not know that, Sassenach?”
-Jamie Fraser
